A Toast for the Campers

by Katherine Corwin

To the wonderful campers of Waukeela, here is a toast to you:

During pre-Camp the dining hall is half empty
The pine grove is silent
Crystal Lake is still chilly
The sun is starting to shine in preparation of the summer which has not yet begun
Then on June 28th something magical happens to the pine grove
The silence has been broken by the laughter of girls, young and old
The splash of Crystal Lake, the echoes of strokes being taught, dives being mastered
The heat has come; the yellow eyes of the sun shine over Eaton Center
The hugs begin, the cheer, pep and vim
The pine grove is no longer a quiet place of mystery and the lonesome breeze no longer blows
From the oldest Scotch Pine to the youngest Lep the excitement can be felt
We all gather for grilled cheese and tomato soup, Tim's loveliest and best
The scotch pines will start their song
State their authority so all of camp knows who they are all summer long
The summer has officially begun,
I know because everyone's age group has loudly sung
Where would we be without all of you,
Who would keep us laughing, keep us on our toes.
What would we do with all the ace bandages
If it weren't for the injured, weren't for the bold,
how boring it would be if there weren't any broken toes!
Each of you are special in your own way
Each of you are wild things, passionate and daring with a Waukeela spirit which is everlasting.
You have tamed this place with your magic
The most wild thing of all, each Waukeela girl you sing loud and true
I will miss you all dearly from my spot in the office, despite the constant package requests you are all sweet and caring.
Have a fabulous year, and remember if you are sad there is always a place for you:
"beneath the pines and the sky so blue sheltering mountains on every side firmly gathering friendships it is there where our dreams abide, Waukeela."
