Our sailing program gives every Waukeela girl the exhilarating chance to skim over clear blue water with the White Mountains in front and the wind at her back.
On our new Laser Pico sailboats, beginner sailors learn the basics of water safety from their sailing counselor, and then move on to learn the various parts of the boat. Next, counselors captain the sailboats around Crystal Lake, demonstrating how to steer and turn the boats into and out of the wind. A camper's responsibility and duties in the sailboat increase as their level of experience and confidence increases until they are ready to take the tiller under the counselor's watchful direction.
Seasoned sailors, having already demonstrated their "sea legs," move on to more complicated tasks, such as rigging and steering. Eventually, when all the skills are mastered, sailors take the boat out with a friend for a solo run, as the sailing counselor remains on shore.
