Horseback Riding

Almost every young girl wishes for a horse at some point in her life, and Waukeela helps make those dreams come true through its horseback riding program. English saddle riding instruction is available to campers for a fee of $45 per lesson. Campers can sign up for two to four lessons per week; three lessons per week are recommended. Classes consist of two to five riders with one to two instructors.

Waukeela has classes for girls who have never been on a horse, and for girls who would never get off if they didn't have to. Campers learn how to walk, trot and canter, while more advanced riders receive instruction in jumping. Tacking, horse care and barn maintenance are also part of a camper's learning experience. Although most classes are held in one of two riding paddocks, 15 miles of trails are also accessible, providing the opportunities for picturesque trail rides in the woodlands surrounding camp.

horseWaukeela's riding instructors are not only skilled-riders themselves but also must have previous experience teaching riding to children. Many come from the equestrian program at Mt. Holyoke College, one of the leading college riding programs in the U.S., which is coached by C.J. Law, a former Waukeela girl!!
