With the White Mountains surrounding us to the north and west and south, Waukeela's hiking program offers an awesome variety of hikes and climbs for all ages and ability levels. Beyond the introductory day hike that every camper goes on each session, there are numerous optional day trips for all campers and overnight camping trips for girls 10 and up.
Each hiking group which ventures forth from camp consists of up to 10 campers, accompanied by two experienced trip counselors. All hikes are guaranteed to include one or several natural features for the girls to enjoy such as a beautiful view, a stream or lake in which to swim, waterfalls in which to splash, or a boulder field to scramble over.
Trip leaders instruct hikers on how to practice low-impact camping: cooking outdoors, building fires and pitching tents with as little damage to the surroundings as possible. Map reading, water purification and other backpacking skills are also learned.
10-12 year olds have the opportunity to take overnight trips in which they will stay in huts maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Club. Dinner, breakfast, and bedding is provided on these hikes by the AMC, so our younger hikers need not carry heavy backpacks in order to be able to enjoy these trips.
